The analysis revealed complete sequence homogeneity across all individuals and breeds studied, yet identified 15 discrepancies between their data and existing GenBank reference sequences, which the authors determined were likely sequencing errors in the deposited references rather than genuine variation. Although the finding of no Y-chromosome variation even within this genetically diverse feral population suggests the earlier consensus of extremely low male-line genetic diversity in horses is robust, the significant error rate in publicly available reference sequences has important implications for future comparative studies—highlighting the need for rigorous validation of deposited sequences before using them as standards in equine genetic research.
