Summary

# Editorial Summary: Thyroglossal Duct Cyst in Poultry — A First Case Report Thyroglossal duct cysts represent a rare congenital cervical anomaly that, whilst documented across several mammalian species including horses, has never previously been identified in avian species. Pop Romelia and colleagues present the first recorded case of this condition in a Transylvanian Naked Neck hen, discovered during necropsy following presentation with diphtheroid mucocutaneous lesions. The cystic mass, measuring 0.5 cm adjacent to the caudal edge of the left thyroid gland, exhibited histological characteristics consistent with thyroglossal duct origin—specifically, a lining of well-differentiated ciliated cuboidal epithelium with positive nuclear immunoreactivity for Thyroid transcription factor 1, confirming thyroidal tissue origin. Whilst this case falls outside equine practice, it extends our understanding of congenital thyroid anomalies across species and may inform clinicians about differential diagnoses when encountering unexplained cervical masses or mucocutaneous presentations in rare or exotic animals. The histopathological methodology employed here—combining conventional histology with immunohistochemical confirmation—provides a useful diagnostic framework should similar lesions present in equine practice, particularly in young animals with cervical swellings of uncertain aetiology.

Practical Takeaways

  • Thyroglossal duct cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis for cervical masses in poultry, though they remain exceptionally rare
  • Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination is necessary to confirm thyroglossal duct cyst diagnosis
  • This case expands the known range of species susceptible to this congenital anomaly beyond mammals to birds

Key Findings

  • First documented case of thyroglossal duct cyst in an avian species (hen)
  • Cystic mass measured 0.5 cm at caudal edge of left thyroid gland
  • Histological examination showed ciliated cuboidal epithelial lining with positive immunoreactivity for thyroid transcription factor 1
  • Lesion was associated with diphtheroid mucocutaneous manifestations in the cervical region
