# Incomplete Tarsal Ossification and Racing Performance in Thoroughbreds Prematurity is a well-recognised risk factor for developmental orthopaedic disease, yet the specific relationship between gestation length and incomplete ossification of the tarsal cuboidal bones—and its consequences for athletic function—has received limited investigation. This retrospective cohort study examined 115 Thoroughbred foals with incomplete tarsal ossification (graded 1–4 on a modified ossification index) alongside their breeding records and subsequent racing performance from 1994 to 2011, comparing outcomes with maternal siblings to control for genetic and environmental factors. Foals with Grades 1 and 2 ossification were typically premature (gestation <325 days), whereas Grades 3 and 4 showed no consistent association with shortened gestation. More significantly for practitioners, foals with Grades 2 and 3 were substantially less likely to race than their unaffected siblings, and across Grades 1–3, affected animals earned approximately £19,000–20,000 less in prize money than their maternal relatives. The findings suggest that incomplete tarsal ossification, particularly when detected early (Grades 1–3), represents a meaningful predictor of reduced racing soundness and longevity, warranting careful radiographic monitoring in premature foals and potentially influencing management decisions regarding training progression and racing careers.
