Summary
Mild equine asthma represents a significant inflammatory airway condition in horses, yet the precise immunological mechanisms underlying corticosteroid response remain incompletely characterised. Researchers administered dexamethasone to six healthy and seven asthmatic Thoroughbreds, then analysed bronchoalveolar lavage fluid to measure changes in twelve key cytokine and chemokine mRNA expression profiles (including interleukins, interferon-gamma, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and eotaxin-2). Dexamethasone treatment produced differential responses between healthy and asthmatic horses, with notable suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators in diseased animals, though the magnitude and specificity of these changes varied across the cytokine panel. Understanding how corticosteroids modulate these molecular pathways provides evidence-based support for current therapeutic protocols and may help identify horses likely to respond poorly to standard treatment regimens. These findings could inform more targeted interventions in cases of corticosteroid-refractory mild asthma, particularly where individualised immunological profiling becomes feasible in clinical practice.

Practical Takeaways
- •Injected dexamethasone modulates the inflammatory cytokine response in mild asthma, supporting its use as first-line therapy for this condition
- •Understanding dexamethasone's effects on specific cytokine expression may help optimize dosing and monitoring protocols for asthmatic horses
- •The cytokine profile changes with treatment could be useful biomarkers for assessing treatment response in clinical practice
Key Findings
- •Dexamethasone injection altered cytokine mRNA expression patterns in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of horses with mild asthma
- •Study measured 12 cytokines (IL-1β, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p35, IL-17, IL-23, IFN-γ, Eotaxin-2, TNF-α) in response to corticosteroid treatment
- •Treatment effects on relative cytokine mRNA expression were evaluated between healthy controls (n=6) and asthmatic horses (n=7)
