Navicular syndrome remains a significant challenge in equine practice, and whilst joint supplements are widely used, evidence for their efficacy in this condition is limited. Researchers at Auburn University conducted a randomised, blinded, placebo-controlled trial with 14 horses presenting with progressive forelimb lameness attributable to navicular syndrome, administering either Cosequin (glucosamine HCl, chondroitin sulphate, and manganese ascorbate) or placebo for eight weeks. Both investigator-assessed and owner-assessed lameness scores improved significantly in the treatment group compared with placebo (P = 0.05 and P = 0.045 respectively), with measurable gains evident by week four and sustained through week eight; however, radiographic examination of the navicular bones showed no significant structural changes between groups.
